A total of 68 road related offences were detected in Chippenham and Calne during Project Zero last week.

Project Zero is a roads policing operation held every week at a different location in the county.

It sees officers targeting drivers committing any of the fatal five offences in a bid to reduce the number of casualties on our roads. While the work taking place is very much everyday work for our RPU officers, the project sees the department intensify resources to target those who are driving at excess speed, drink/drug driving, using a phone while driving, not wearing a seatbelt or driving in a careless or dangerous manner.

On Wednesday, the team worked alongside the speed enforcement team and detected 68 offences.

One of these was a 27-year-old man from Purton arrested in Rowden Hill on suspicion of drug driving. He’s since been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

Sgt Will Ayres said: “Our speed enforcement team attended several areas in the town which had been raised by the community as areas of concern regarding excess speed - we will continue to visit these areas working alongside neighbourhood officers to provide reassurance and visibility to local residents.

“It’s always disappointing to see drivers continuing to commit fatal five offences – not wearing a seatbelt is just a basic step everyone should complete when getting into a vehicle and ultimately it could save your life.

“We’ll continue to target drivers who fail to abide by the law to prevent serious or fatal collisions on our roads.”
