A man has been arrested in Calne following a series of immigration and welfare checks carried out at businesses across north Wiltshire.

Neighbourhood officers from Chippenham, Calne and Corsham carried out the checks yesterday (Tuesday 24th March), supported by Home Office Immigration Officers.

Teams visited a number of business premises to ensure employees were working legally, were safe, and were being treated appropriately.

The checks also aimed to identify any potential offences linked to immigration, modern slavery or human trafficking.

Sgt Jamie Ball said: “Officers have attended businesses to conduct immigration checks on workers, as well as checks on general working conditions and the welfare of those at the premises.

“One arrest was made in Calne in connection with a male overstaying in the country.

“It is important that our officers continue to regularly check that employees are working legally and being treated appropriately. It’s also crucial that business owners check the immigration status of any employees they are hiring.

“We will continue to clamp down on those breaching laws around immigration and employee rights.”

Anyone with information about suspected crime is asked to contact police on 101 or via their website. In an emergency, call 999.
