Residents using Lower Compton Household Recycling Centre will soon need to book an appointment before visiting, as Wiltshire Council introduces a new pilot booking system at six recycling centres across the county.
The new system will open for bookings from 8th September, with pre-booked visits becoming mandatory from 14th September.
Lower Compton is one of six sites taking part in the pilot, alongside Devizes, Melksham, Purton, Salisbury and Stanton St Quintin.
Initially, residents will be able to book a 30-minute time slot up to a week in advance, with a limited number of same-day appointments also available. Wiltshire Council says the length of appointment slots will be kept under review to ensure the sites can accommodate as many visitors as possible.
The council says the booking system is designed to reduce queues, improve the customer experience and minimise disruption for nearby communities and businesses, particularly during busy periods.
The introduction of the pilot will not affect opening hours, the types of waste accepted or existing permit requirements.
Residents are being encouraged to use the online booking system, although those unable to access the internet can contact Wiltshire Council's Rubbish and Recycling team, who will be able to make a booking on their behalf.
Councillor Paul Sample, Wiltshire Council's Cabinet Member for Environment, Climate and Waste, said: "We want our Household Recycling Centres to provide the best possible experience for residents. By managing demand more effectively, we expect to reduce queues, make visits more convenient and lessen the impact on surrounding communities and local businesses.
"The pilot is about improving how the service operates, but the service itself is not changing. Residents will still be able to dispose of the same types of waste, opening hours will remain the same and any existing permit requirements will continue to apply."
The council says it will promote the new system over the coming weeks ahead of the pilot beginning in September.
Lower Compton Household Recycling Centre is due to close when its current contract ends, with Wiltshire Council planning to replace it with a new council-owned recycling centre elsewhere in the area.
