More than 300 people signed a petition to save Calne Post Office in just two hours on Saturday.
The petition, organised by Calne Labour Party, attracted 306 signatures during the campaign and calls on Post Office Ltd and Chippenham MP Sarah Gibson to do everything possible to keep the town's post office open.
Campaigners say the post office provides essential services that many residents rely on, particularly older people, those without access to a car or the internet, local businesses and other members of the community.
The petition states: "Calne deserves a secure, accessible, and sustainable post office for the future."
Sarah Gibson MP told Calne News: “When the Post Office first contacted me about the closure of the Calne branch at Morrisons on 8th August, it was clear that they themselves did not want the service to close and were actively seeking a new operator and suitable premises.
“Even so, the closure will be a real loss for Calne and a serious concern for the community. The Post Office is an essential local service, particularly for older and more vulnerable residents, people without access to private transport, and those who rely on cash and face-to-face banking.
“I have kept up regular correspondence with the Post Office throughout the process. Most recently, I sent a letter pressing for clarity on the timetable for securing a replacement, any interim arrangements that may be put in place, and the support available for residents who may struggle to travel to alternative branches.
“An advert inviting applications is now live, however, it currently looks unlikely that a replacement will be in place before the existing branch closes. I will continue pressing for a solution and making sure every possible option is explored to minimise the gap in provision.”
Anyone who was unable to sign the paper petition on Saturday can still add their name at Calne Post Office or by signing the petition online.
