CALNE is preparing to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day with a series of events throughout the week, inviting residents of all ages to participate in the commemorations.

Celebrations kick off on Bank Holiday Monday, 5th May, with a "Family Bring and Share" picnic lunch at Marden House from 10 am to 3 pm. The event promises entertainment and activities for all ages.

Simultaneously, the Calne Heritage Centre will be offering free admission to its World War II display from 10 am to 4 pm.

The official VE Day, Thursday, May 8th, will begin with a formal proclamation read by Calne's Town Crier at the Proclamation Steps in Mill Street, followed by a service at the War Memorial in Church Street.

In a separate gesture of respect, Calne Town Hall is extending an invitation to 80 local residents, aged 80 and over, to a celebratory Fish and Chip lunch on Thursday, 8th May at 12 noon. Residents are encouraged to nominate themselves, a family member, friend, or neighbour to attend this special event. Nominations are open to the public.

The day's commemorations will culminate with the Bells of St Mary's ringing at 6:30 pm, joining in the National Celebration of Peace.

Residents interested in participating in the Fish and Chip lunch are encouraged to register their place via the online form: https://form.jotform.com/251064924118353 or by calling 01249 814000
