ALISON Robinson, Director of Council Services for Calne Town Council, is back at work this week having just taken part in the mind-boggling Brathay Challenge to raise money for charity.
The Brathay challenge is an extraordinary endurance event – 10 marathons in 10 days around Windermere in the Lake District. There were 19 people taking part and Alison was one of 4 women.
Alison told us: "I travelled up on Wednesday 8th and started ten marathons in ten days on 9th May. The aim was to get up there and just get it done, the driver was raising over £3000 for the Brathay Trust, a charity that supports young disadvantage people in the North West - which I know from my time working in Newcastle upon Tyne."
Although Alison had completed all her training prior to travelling to Windermere, her lead up to the big day was marred by illness when she caught Covid the week before. She explained: "The first three days were hard as I still felt very tired after Covid, by day 8 I had an infection, so I started antibiotics. Day 9 and 10 were slow and uncomfortable but I kept going.
"The low point was definitely day 8 when I was in pain and had to flag a support car down to get me medicine. The high point was coming over the finish line and being welcomed by my partner - and knowing I done it!"
To help reach the £3000 target, she organised a quiz night in the Town Hall which took place back in April and raised an incredible £1700 which will be split between the Brathay Trust and Wiltshire based The Rise Trust. Alison added: "I was keen to include funding for a local group that is supporting young people."
Now the challenge is completed, Alison reflected on her achievements: "I have a close ultra marathon friend who says ‘we can do hard things’ and we really can!"
