For most people, the thought of running one marathon is daunting enough – but Calne Town Council’s Director of Council Services, Alison Robinson is aiming to complete 10 in a row for charity next month.

The Brathay challenge is an extraordinary endurance event – 10 marathons in 10 days, around Windermere in the Lake District. There are 19 people taking part and Alison is one of 4 women. The final marathon coincides with the official Windermere marathon, so they will be joined on that day by a few thousand runners.

Alison will take the first steps in her 262-mile challenge on 9th May 2024 as part of a fund raiser for the Brathay Trust - a charity based in the north of England where she worked for many years.

She told us: "The charity I’m raising funds for is called the Brathay Trust, they do amazing work with young people and their families and carers.

"I like to do a challenge every year raising money for charity so when I saw this it seemed like a great idea, although now with three weeks to go I’m getting a little nervous. The training has been intense, but I know it will be worth it."

In order to take part in the challenge Alison had to raise £3000. To help reach that target, she organised a quiz night in the Town Hall which took place last Friday, 12th April.

The evening was a great success with over 80 people taking part. This included the booking of tables from local groups and businesses such as Calne Men’s Shed, Calne Football Club, and Butfield Breach Estate Agents.

Guests were treated to a drink on arrival - sponsored by Five Zero Supercars, who also donated an auction item. Other event sponsors included Calne Catering and Events who sponsored the food, raffle prizes and an auction item and Cottontail Florists. Local band Nostalja provided their music free of charge and brought the house down.

An incredible £1700 was raised on the night which will be split between the Brathay Trust and Wiltshire based The Rise Trust. Alison added: "I was keen to include funding for a local group that is supporting young people.
