Morrisons has confirmed plans to close its Morrisons Daily store in Phelps Parade, Calne.

The store was rebranded as a Morrisons Daily in February 2024 after Morrisons took over the McColl's chain, ending its long-standing association with the Martin's brand.

Morrisons said it had invested significantly in former McColl's stores since acquiring the business in 2022, rebranding and repositioning the estate as Morrisons Daily stores.

A Morrisons spokesperson told Calne News: "The performance of all company owned stores across our Convenience business is subject to continuous review.

"This process has identified a number of stores, which were part of the McColl's acquisition, whose performance has been challenged for a number of years and which are loss making, despite remedial action.

"This situation has been exacerbated in more recent years by significant cost increases resulting from Government policy choices, which have made returning these stores to profitability even more difficult."

The spokesperson added: "Having completed the review, we are now proposing to take the tough but necessary decision to close a number of these stores over the next few months."

The proposal means some Morrisons Daily employees could face redundancy, with a consultation process due to begin shortly.

"Regrettably, the proposal means that some of our Convenience store colleagues will now be at risk of redundancy and a consultation will commence shortly," the spokesperson said.

"We understand this will be difficult news for them and we will be providing these colleagues with all necessary support."

Morrisons said it would seek to find alternative opportunities for affected staff elsewhere in the business, including in its supermarkets, logistics operations and manufacturing sites where possible.

Despite the proposed closures, the company said expansion of its convenience business remains a key part of its future plans.

The spokesperson added: "We currently have around 1,700 Convenience stores, opening more than 120 new franchise stores last year, and we have a robust plan in place for further expansion in 2026.

"We continue to see the opportunity to open hundreds more franchise convenience stores in the years ahead."

A Post Office spokesperson said: “We have been informed by Morrisons that following a review they are proposing to take the difficult decision to close 60 Morrisons Daily stores that host Post Offices including where Calne Post Office is located. We fully recognise the inconvenience this will cause our customers who rely on our banking and parcel services in particular.

“Should the decision be confirmed that the store is closing, the store and Post Office would close in the next few months. We will therefore be advertising the vacancy for the branch on our runapostoffice.co.uk website shortly and welcome applications from nearby retailers looking to host a Post Office inside their store.”

No closure date for the Phelps Parade store has yet been announced but the closure of yet another shop is a blow to local retail.
