The Town Council is moving swiftly to fill a recent vacancy in the Calne Central Ward following the resignation of Councillor Michael Hudston earlier this week.

With less than six months remaining in the current four-year term, the council has announced that it will co-opt a replacement councillor to serve until May 2025.

In a notice issued by Wiltshire Council, the Town Council is inviting applications from eligible residents interested in stepping into the role.

To be eligible:
A British subject or a citizen of the Commonwealth or European Union

  • 18 years of age or over
  • Registered to vote in the area or have lived, worked or owned property there for at least 12 months before the date of the co-option

The criteria set out in S.80 of the Local Government Act 1972 says you cannot stand if you:

  • Are subject of a bankruptcy, restrictions order or interim order.
  • Work for the Council that you want to be councillor for, or for another local authority in a politically restricted  post.
  • Have been sentenced to prison for three months or longer, included suspended sentences, during five years before the date of co-option.
  • Have been convicted of a corrupt or illegal practice by an election court.


Those wishing to be considered are encouraged to submit a written application, accompanied by a brief personal statement, by the deadline of Wednesday, January 15, 2025.

Potential candidates are also invited to engage directly with Alison Robinson, the Director of Council Services, and attend upcoming council meetings which can provide valuable insights into the responsibilities and workings of the town council.
