A planning application has been submitted to build a 60-bed care home and seven assisted living units on the former Co-op site in Calne.
The proposal, submitted to Wiltshire Council by Cedar Care, is for a 60-bed care home on the former Co-op site off Mill Street and seven assisted living units on the former Lower Pippin car park. The two buildings would be linked by the existing pedestrian bridges over the River Marden.
Demolition of the former Co-op store started in Spring earlier this year, ending years of complaints from residents about anti-social behaviour, break-ins and fires at the derelict building.
The application also shows the scheme would include landscaping, new parking facilities and improvements to the riverside setting. Around 70 full-time jobs are expected to be created when the care home opens.
The application states the care home and assisted living accommodation would provide a total of 81 rooms, while parking on the site would reduce from 67 spaces to 33, including two accessible bays.
Cedar Care purchased the former Co-op building in September 2024 and has consistently said it had no intention of reopening it as a retail store, instead planning to redevelop the site for specialist care accommodation.
Wiltshire Council approved the demolition of the long-vacant building in late 2025 following a series of delays, with work beginning after the Lower Pippin car park closed in March this year to allow demolition to take place.
The planning application can be viewed here and will now be considered by Wiltshire Council before a decision is made.
