The Post Office says it is exploring ways to restore services in Calne following the announcement that the Morrisons Daily store in Phelps Parade is to close next month.

The convenience store, which is due to close on 8th August, currently houses the town centre Post Office branch. Its closure means Post Office services at the site will also come to an end.

However, the Post Office has confirmed it is now investigating options to reopen the branch, either at the existing location or elsewhere in the town.

A spokesperson said: "The provision of a Post Office service to our customers in the local community is important to us, and we will continue to work hard to restore services in the area.

"We are currently investigating the options available to enable us to reinstate a Post Office service to the local community, this may include the vacancy being advertised on our website.

"In exploring this, it is important that any service is sustainable for the person operating the service, and for Post Office Limited.

"Future provision will reflect customer numbers and usage and we may take the opportunity to establish an alternative type of service."

The spokesperson added: "We apologise for the inconvenience the closure may cause. We hope that our customers will continue to use Post Office services."

Morrisons announced in June that the Phelps Parade store would close after identifying it as one of several convenience stores across the country that were no longer financially viable despite efforts to improve performance.

The store opened as a Morrisons Daily in February 2024 following a refurbishment after the supermarket chain took over the site.

Morrisons previously said staff affected by the closure would enter a consultation process and that it would seek to find alternative roles for employees elsewhere in the business where possible.
