Calne Town Council has announced that tomorrow's Calneval of Colour and Summer Festival has been cancelled.
The decision comes after the council said there were not enough volunteer marshals to ensure the event could be held safely and meet the legal requirements needed for it to go ahead.
The annual event, which was due to take place on Saturday (27 June), was set to bring thousands of people into Calne town centre for a day of entertainment, live performances, community groups, family activities and the popular carnival procession.
In a statement, the council said: "It is with great disappointment that we must announce that this year's Calneval has been cancelled. We have not been able to secure the minimum number of marshals required to safely deliver the event. The safety of everyone attending and participating in the carnival is a high risk priority especially with the high temperatures forecast and without sufficient marhsals we can not proceed."
The Teddy Bear Parachute Jump at St Mary's Church will still be going ahead as will Claire's Circus Workshop on The Green. Jennings Funfair will also be in the lower Sainsbury's car park both tonight and tomorrow.
The news will come as a disappointment to the many residents, visitors, performers, traders and volunteers who had been looking forward to the event and had spent months preparing for it.
