A special mosaic created by pupils from military families at Fynamore Primary School has been unveiled as part of a project bringing together service children across Wiltshire.

Eleven pupils took part in creating the artwork through the Wiltshire Festival of Friends, a programme run by the Armed Forces Education Trust. Schools across Wiltshire with registered military children were invited to take part after the scheme was rolled out in counties with large military communities.

The project at Fynamore was funded by Calne Lions.

The mosaic features a dandelion - the official flower of the military child. The school said the dandelion was chosen because it can put down roots anywhere and thrive, just like military children who often have to adapt to new homes, schools and friendships.

The children worked together to complete the mosaic, building friendships and supporting one another throughout the project. It will now be displayed at the school for pupils and visitors to enjoy.

As part of the Wiltshire Festival of Friends, Fynamore has also trained a Service Champion who will provide support for military children and their families within the school.

A Year 6 pupil who took part said: "It's good to know there are other children in the school who are in the same situation as me. I liked doing the mosaic and helping the younger children."

The school's Service Champion said: "It's been wonderful to see the children relax and feel comfortable within the group. They have bonded as a group and all support each other."

Calne Lions said it was pleased to support the project after being approached by the school earlier this year, providing a grant of just over £200 towards the materials.

The charity added that schools, community groups and organisations with projects requiring funding are welcome to get in touch.
