New specialist resource bases are opening in Wiltshire this September, including one at Kingsbury Green Academy in Calne, as the council expands support for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

Two of the new bases are at Kingsbury Green Academy in Calne and Noremarsh Junior School in Royal Wootton Bassett.

The resource bases are being developed within mainstream schools, providing tailored support for pupils with additional needs while allowing them to remain part of mainstream school life, learn alongside their peers and build connections within their school communities.

Wiltshire Council says it has invested more than £10 million in creating and expanding resource bases across the county in recent years as part of its wider SEND programme.

The specialist bases support a range of needs, including speech, language and communication needs, autism spectrum condition and complex learning needs.

From September 2026, there will be 27 primary resource bases and six secondary resource bases across Wiltshire.

At Kingsbury Green Academy, the new secondary resource base is intended to provide additional support for students with SEND.

Headteacher Nicola Bull said: “We're incredibly proud to be developing a new secondary resource base at KGA. This provision will enable us to better support students with additional needs, ensuring they feel included, valued, and able to succeed alongside their peers.”

She said the new provision reflected the school's commitment to inclusive education and meeting the diverse needs of its community.

At Noremarsh Junior School, the new provision will be a Speech, Language and Communication Specialist Base.

Headteacher Hilary MacMeekin said: “We are incredibly excited and proud to announce the opening of our new Speech, Language and Communication Specialist Base this September.”

She described the opening as a significant milestone in the school's commitment to inclusion and ensuring every child can thrive.

Councillor Jon Hubbard, Cabinet Member for SEND, said the new bases were part of a wider programme to increase specialist support across Wiltshire.

He said: “We want children and young people with SEND to have the right support, in the right place and at the right time.”

The council says the expansion is intended to give children and families greater choice and support, while helping pupils access the education they need within their local communities wherever possible.
