The South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) is celebrating National Apprenticeship Week (10th to 16th February) by recognizing the crucial role apprentices play in providing dedicated patient care across the South West region.

With over 250 apprentices currently working within the Trust, spanning roles from paramedic apprentices to those specialising in cyber security and finance, SWASFT emphasises the vital support these individuals provide to the operational side of the ambulance service.

"Apprenticeships are absolutely vital for the future of the ambulance service," said Rich Francis, Apprenticeship Lead at SWASFT.

"They provide a fantastic opportunity for individuals to gain valuable skills and experience while contributing directly to patient care. By investing in our apprentices, we are not only developing a highly skilled workforce but also ensuring that we have the capacity to meet the evolving needs of our communities now and in the future."

The paramedic apprenticeship program offers an alternative route to becoming a fully qualified paramedic, bypassing the traditional university pathway.

Apprentices receive comprehensive training to respond to emergency calls, deliver advanced medical care, and make critical decisions under pressure. Their intensive training includes practical experience, theoretical study, clinical placements, and classroom instruction in areas like pharmacology, patient assessment, and advanced life support.

SWASFT has been utilising the Paramedic degree apprenticeship since January 2021, with over 305 paramedic apprentices enrolled to date.

The Trust aims to have 565 paramedic apprentices integrated into the workforce by 2029/2030, enrolling 120 paramedic apprentices annually.

Mark Walker, a Paramedic Apprenticeship Student at SWASFT, shared his experience: "Over the course of the apprenticeship, I have come to understand the full role of being a Paramedic and have a newfound respect for those who make it look so 'easy'. The skills I have been taught, along with self-learning, mean that I have now confidently led many serious incidents and come away feeling fulfilled and proud of my role."

In recognition of its commitment to apprenticeship programs, SWASFT was a finalist at the Apprenticeship Awards Regional Finals in the Large Employer of the Year category in October 2024.

SWASFT is dedicated to developing the next generation of healthcare professionals and encourages those interested in a rewarding NHS career to explore apprenticeship opportunities at their website.
