Springfields Academy in Calne is celebrating after being recognised with a national award for its outstanding support of young carers.

The school has received a Young Carers in Schools award, in recognition of its commitment to helping pupils who take on caring responsibilities at home.

Young carers are children under 18 who help look after a family member due to illness, disability, mental health conditions or addiction.

The award, part of a national programme run by charities Carers Trust and The Children’s Society, recognises schools that go above and beyond to identify and support young carers.

Springfields Academy was praised for its wide range of support, including dedicated clubs and drop-in sessions, enrichment opportunities such as trips and rewards, and regular pupil voice sessions designed specifically for young carers.

The school also supports families through coffee mornings and group sessions, helping to build a strong and inclusive support network.

Research shows that many young carers struggle to balance education and their responsibilities, with some experiencing lower confidence and wellbeing, making targeted support in schools especially important.

Vicky Morgan, Head of Young Carers and Young Adult Carers at Carers Trust, said: “We’re delighted to present the Young Carers in Schools award to The Springfields Academy.

“By identifying young carers and putting support in place, schools and teachers can make a huge difference to their wellbeing and education.”

Lisa Witherden, Head of National Programmes at The Children’s Society, added: “We’re absolutely thrilled that The Springfields Academy has achieved this award, demonstrating their commitment to ensuring young carers get the vital support they need to thrive.”

Nicola Whitcombe, Executive Headteacher at The Springfields Academy, said: “We are incredibly proud of our young carers and the support we are able to offer them.

“Our dedicated staff are committed to enabling them to thrive, recognising the incredible role they play in caring for others.”

The Springfields Academy, part of Reach South Academy Trust, supports pupils aged 4 to 19 with autism and speech, language and communication needs.
