There’s plenty happening in and around Calne this weekend, with the final events of the Calne Music & Arts Festival taking place alongside markets, live music, family activities and events further afield. From local makers and artists to model displays, beekeeping, live tribute acts and the return of Marlborough’s traditional Mop Fair, there are plenty of options for getting out and about.
Calne Music & Arts Festival
The Calne Music & Arts Festival reaches its final weekend, with several events taking place in the town on Saturday 10th October. At 10.30am, local artists Rachel Heard and James Dobson will join Art Director Genevieve Sioka at Marden House for a free artist talk, exploring their work and creative careers. The Open Art Exhibition will also be open from 12pm to 6pm. The festival comes to a close on Saturday evening with The Magic of Opera - An Evening of Passion at Marden House from 7.30pm, featuring Opera Anywhere performing a selection of well-known arias, duets and ensembles from composers including Verdi, Puccini and Bizet. Tickets are £15, with reduced prices for Festival Friends.
Love Calne Craft & Gift Market
The Love Calne Craft & Gift Market returns to the town on Saturday 10th October, with the market running from 10am to 4.30pm. It’s a chance to browse stalls from local makers and independent traders, with a range of handmade gifts, crafts and other items on offer.
Warm Homes, Lower Bills
There’s an opportunity for local residents to get free advice about energy bills and making their homes more efficient at Calne Town Hall on Saturday. The Warm Homes, Lower Bills event, organised by Sarah Gibson MP in partnership with Sustainable Calne, runs from 10am to 2pm. Advice will be available on cutting energy bills, grants and financial support, making homes warmer and more energy efficient, with free refreshments available.
Military & Transport Model Show
Model-making enthusiasts can head to the REME Museum in Lyneham on Saturday for its annual Military and Transport Model Show, running from 10am to 4pm. The family-friendly event will feature modelling clubs from across the country, remote-controlled tanks, model-making kits for sale and displays from the museum’s own collection, with the show taking place throughout the museum galleries and venue spaces. Entry also includes access to the REME Museum, while refreshments will be available from Crown’s Café. Free parking is available, although visitors are asked to reserve a space in advance.
Wiltshire Bee & Honey Day
The Wiltshire Bee & Honey Day takes place at Devizes Corn Exchange on Saturday from 10am to 4pm, with free entry. The event is aimed at anyone interested in bees and beekeeping, whether they're already involved or simply thinking about getting started. There will be talks on beekeeping, pollinators and the environment, the annual County Honey Show, exhibitors selling bee-related products and equipment, candle rolling, a virtual hive experience and tastings including honey beer and mead. Speakers throughout the day include Steve Riley, Kate Graydon, Richard Rickitt and Richard Oliver.
ABBA Sensation
It’s a night for the Dancing Queens and Super Troupers at The Neeld in Chippenham on Saturday, with Sensation - The ABBA Tribute Band taking to the stage from 7.30pm. The show features many of ABBA’s best-known songs, including Dancing Queen, Mamma Mia and Take A Chance On Me, with tickets priced at £23.75.
Live Music at The Ruze
There’s live music at The Ruze in Shutterspeed on Friday 9th October, with Grassroot Band Night featuring The Kabins and Snake In The Footspa. Doors and the bar open at 6.30pm, with the event suitable for those aged 14 and over. Tickets are £10 on the door or £16 in advance.
Also at The Ruze on Saturday 10th October is Sounds of Seattle, a tribute to some of the biggest acts to emerge from Seattle, with support from Hole Tripper. Doors and the bar open at 6.30pm and the event is for ages 14 and over. Advance tickets are £15, with tickets on the door priced at £20.
Marlborough Little Mop Fair
The first of Marlborough's two annual Mop Fairs arrives in the High Street on Saturday 10th October, with the Little Mop Fair getting underway from midday. The Showmen's Guild will fill the town centre with fairground rides, stalls, games and refreshments for the day. The Big Mop will then return to Marlborough the following Saturday, 17th October.
Pewsham Locks Open Day
The Wilts & Berks Canal Trust will hold its final Pewsham Locks Open Day of the year on Saturday 10th October. Visitors can take a trip along the canal on the wheelchair-accessible electric boat The Mary Archard from 12.30pm, with the chance to spot wildlife along the way. There will also be tours and demonstrations from the Trust’s Green Team, starting from Double Bridge at 11am and 2.30pm, while work-site tours will be available from 10am. A pop-up café will also be open from 10am serving drinks and cakes. Boat trips and site tours are subject to availability.
Chippenham Plant-Based Market
And on Sunday, Chippenham Plant-Based Market will take over the High Street from 10am to 4pm. The market will feature plant-based street food, barista coffee, cakes, handmade crafts and other food and drink, making it a good option for anyone looking for something a little different on Sunday.
