There’s plenty to see and do in and around Calne this week, with live music, charity events, family activities, classic and modern cars, community events and even the chance to explore a five-acre garden. From Goatfest at nearby Goatacre and an evening of cars at the Atwell-Wilson Motor Museum to a record and art fair in Chippenham, there are plenty of options for getting out and about this weekend.
Young Voices September Sing – Friday 4th September
Young people in Calne are invited to St Mary’s Church on Friday, 4th September, for the Young Voices 
September Sing. Running from 5pm to 7pm, the event is open to pupils in Year 5 and above and will include singing, pizza and sweets, along with an informal performance. The evening offers young people the chance to sing, meet others and enjoy an informal evening together at the church in Church Street.
Goatfest – Friday 4th and Saturday 5th September
Goatfest returns to Goatacre Cricket Ground this weekend with two evenings of live music, food and drink and a festival atmosphere. Friday’s entertainment begins at 6.30pm with Abbaolics, supported by Charlie Carter and Jol Rose, while Saturday gets underway from 1.30pm with a line-up including The Corinthian Casuals, Homer, Junkyard Dogs, The White Horse Samba Band, The Free Sprits Band, Juliette The Band and Splat The Rat, with further acts also appearing.
There will be a marquee bar serving real ales, ciders, Prosecco, gin and Pimms, along with food and free parking. Tickets are £12 for Friday, £20 for Saturday or £30 for the weekend, with camping also available. Under-18s must be accompanied by a responsible adult and alcohol is not permitted through the festival gates.
Saint Six – Friday 4th September
The Ruze in Chippenham will welcome Saint Six on Friday, 4th September, for an evening of chart hits with a rock and roll twist. The live band will bring a selection of popular songs together with the sound and style of 1950s rock and roll. Doors and the bar open at 6.30pm, with the event open to those aged 16 and over. Tickets are £15.
Coffee Morning and Clothes Sale at Heddington – Saturday 5th September
Heddington Village Hall will host a coffee morning and sale of new and nearly new clothing on Saturday, 5th September, from 10am to 2pm. The event is raising funds for Friends of The Ivy and will offer a selection of men’s and ladies’ clothing, including new and nearly new items, as well as handbags and shoes.
Visitors can also stop for coffee, homemade cake and a chat with friends. Donations of nearly new clothing, handbags and shoes are welcomed in advance, with parking available at the rear of the village hall.
Prostate Screening Event – Saturday 5th September
Calne Lions have teamed up with The Graham Fulford Charitable Trust to hold a prostate cancer screening event at the Tesco Superstore in Calne on Saturday, 5th September. The event is open to men aged 40 and over and will offer a PSA blood test, which takes just a few minutes.
The event aims to raise awareness of prostate cancer and provide men with the opportunity to access testing and learn more about the disease. Booking in advance is recommended.
NGS Open Gardens – Falkners Cottage – Saturday 5th September
Falkners Cottage in North Newnton, near Pewsey, will open its five-acre gardens to visitors on Saturday, 5th September, from 2pm to 5pm as part of the National Garden Scheme.
The gardens include colourful formal borders, topiary, a box-framed parterre, courtyard garden rooms and contemporary sculpture, as well as a kitchen garden with hens, meadow, ornamental trees, woodland, wildlife pond, bog garden and a small lake with a summerhouse on an island. Visitors can also take a short walk from the meadow to the 13th-century St James’ Church. Admission is £7 for adults, with children admitted free. Tea, coffee and cake will also be available, with refreshments raising money for The St Timothy Foundation.
Chippenham Record & Art Fair – Saturday 5th September
King Alfred Hall in Chippenham will be transformed into a celebration of music and creativity on Saturday, 5th September, with the Chippenham Record & Art Fair running from 10am to 4pm.
The event will bring together vinyl sellers, DJs and artists, with visitors able to browse records, CDs and musical merchandise alongside arts and crafts. There will also be open decks for DJs and a gallery area. Admission is £1.
Curious Kids: Autumn – Saturday 5th September
Families with young children can head to Wiltshire Museum in Devizes on Saturday, 5th September, for the latest Curious Kids session, this time with an autumn theme. The 50-minute session begins at 10.30am and will include activities, songs and stories designed to provide multi-sensory fun for curious young minds.
The session is aimed at children aged two to five. Tickets cost £5 per child, with an accompanying adult admitted free.
Motorbike Ride-In for Wiltshire & Bath Air Ambulance – Saturday 5th September
Motorbike enthusiasts are invited to fire up their engines and head to the Wiltshire & Bath Air Ambulance airbase on Saturday, 5th September, for a special ride-in supporting the charity. Running from 10am to 1pm, the event will give riders the chance to park up, meet fellow motorbike enthusiasts and, subject to operational requirements, see the air ambulance helicopter and meet members of the crew. Refreshments will be available, with local groups and traders also expected to join the event. Advance booking is recommended, as tickets on the gate will be subject to availability.
Driven. Night @ The Museum Vol. II – Saturday 5th September
Car enthusiasts of all ages can head to the Atwell-Wilson Motor Museum in Calne on Saturday, 5th September, for a special evening meet jointly organised by Driven. The event will bring together a selection of vehicles, with something to interest fans of both classic and modern cars.
The event takes place in the grounds of the Atwell-Wilson Motor Museum from 4pm to 7pm, with the chance to meet fellow car enthusiasts and explore the museum’s collection of more than 100 vehicles. Entry to the grounds for vehicle exhibitors and general visitors is free, while admission to the museum collection costs £10 for adults and £4 for children.
Charity Ball at The Ruze – Saturday 5th September
The Ruze in Chippenham will host a charity ball on Saturday, 5th September, raising money for Breast Cancer UK. Doors and the bar open at 7pm, with live bands providing the entertainment throughout the evening. Tickets are £10, with organisers inviting local people to come along, enjoy an evening of live music and support the charity.
The Curious Club – Sunday 6th September
The Curious Club will meet at The Lansdowne Arms in Derry Hill on Sunday, 6th September, from 10.30am to 12.30pm. The group describes itself as a place for curious people to meet, chat and explore different ideas together, without experts, lectures or pressure.
The session is aimed at people who enjoy conversation and meeting others in a relaxed setting. Booking is required.
