The nights might be drawing in, but things are getting colourful at Heddington Amateur Dramatic Society (HADS), which is preparing to bring Jack and the Beanstalk to the stage for its latest pantomime.

With comedy, colourful costumes and plenty of audience participation promised, the production looks set to offer a traditional panto experience for families and regular theatre-goers alike.

The directors promise all the familiar magic of Jack and the Beanstalk, with a distinctly Heddington flavour. Audiences can expect Jack, his glamorous (and hilarious) mother Dame Trott and the lovable Daisy the Cow to take on the fearsome Giant Blunderbore.

The script features quick-witted banter, musical numbers and references to local Heddington landmarks, alongside the familiar pantomime tradition of shouting “He’s behind you!”

This year’s production brings together a cast and crew of more than 20 local residents, ranging from Year 6 primary school children to experienced amateur dramatics performers.

One of the most wonderful things about this cast is the family connections; this year features mothers and daughters, mother and son and the odd married couple! The leading Jack has been spending weeks perfecting his heroic poses, while Dame Trott has been trying out an array of increasingly outrageous outfits.

Rehearsals have brought their own challenges, particularly the technical work involved in making a giant beanstalk “grow” in front of the audience in the village hall. There have also been plenty of laughs along the way, as the cast works together to get the production ready.

HADS has been part of village life for decades, putting on amateur productions, quizzes and pantomimes for the local community. Run entirely by volunteers, the society brings live theatre to Heddington and provides a creative outlet for people of all ages and backgrounds.

From learning lines to painting sets, the work involved in a production brings people together both on and off the stage.

The society is always keen to welcome new members. While it is on the lookout for people interested in performing in future shows, it is particularly keen to recruit more help behind the scenes this year.

Anyone with an interest in painting, lighting or costumes is encouraged to get in touch. There are also opportunities to help with front-of-house duties or make tea for the cast and crew. Previous acting experience is not essential, and there are plenty of ways to take part without stepping on stage.

Tickets for Jack and the Beanstalk are available through the society’s website. To book tickets or find out more about joining HADS, either on stage or behind the scenes, visit heddingtonamdram.org.uk.
