If you're looking for something to do this weekend, there’s plenty happening in and around Calne. From live music and family fun to events a little further afield, here are some of the things taking place from Friday through to Sunday.
Sweet As Candy Live - Friday 25th September
There’s a night of live music at The Wheatsheaf in Calne on Friday, with Sweet As Candy Live with Caztro. The event gets underway at 9pm and will feature a DJ set covering hip hop, R&B, dancehall, Afrobeat, house, garage, D&B and more.
The Lost Trades - Friday 25th September
There’s live music at The Ruze in Chippenham on Friday evening as The Lost Trades take to the stage, with support from Ruby Darbyshire. The West Country folk/Americana trio bring three-part harmonies and a sound influenced by the folk music of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Doors open at 6.30pm and tickets are £12.
Back To School Autumn Fair – Saturday 26th September
Friends of Priestley Primary School are holding a Back To School Autumn Fair on Saturday 26th September from 12pm to 4pm at Priestley Primary School in Calne. There will be plenty for families to enjoy, including a tombola, human fruit machine, pig racing, hook-a-duck, face painting, crafts, refreshments and gifts, as well as a raffle with some great prizes. The fair is open to everyone and is cash only.
Marlborough Literature Festival - Thursday 24th to Sunday 27th September
Marlborough Literature Festival continues through the weekend, bringing four days of authors, talks, poetry, writing workshops and literary events to the town. There’s a wide-ranging programme for readers and writers, with events taking place at venues around Marlborough, including a Friday event looking at the Faber Letters of William Golding.
Sham Jam Festival - Friday 25th to Sunday 27th September
The final weekend of Melksham’s Sham Jam Festival has plenty going on, with music, comedy, markets and family activities spread across the town. Friday includes Martin Kemp’s Back To The 80s Party, Laughter Craft Comedy and live music in the Market Place, while Saturday brings the Makers’ Market, children’s entertainment, Bingo Lingo and live acoustic music. Sunday rounds things off with live music at King George V Playing Field and Avonside, street art and a tea dance with the Terry Hill Big Band.
Crofton Beam Engines - Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th September
The season's final steaming weekend takes place at Crofton, with the historic beam engines running and lifting water. There is also a special evening steaming and stargazing event on Saturday night.
Cabbage Sunday - Sunday 27th September
The annual Cabbage Sunday fete and auction returns to The New Inn at Winterbourne Monkton on Sunday, running from 12pm to 4pm. The village tradition has been running for around 70 years and this year’s event will include live music, a tombola, raffle and activities for all ages, with money being raised for three causes.
A number of regular community events are also taking place across the town throughout the week.
