If you're looking for something to do this weekend, there’s plenty happening in and around Calne. The Calne Music & Arts Festival gets into full swing, with family activities, live music, French cabaret, chamber music and even a life drawing session, while there are also events, exhibitions and entertainment happening in Chippenham and further afield.

Live Music At The Dog House - Friday 2nd October

There’s live music at The Dog House, Maundrell Road in Calne on Friday evening, with Bluebeard and The Desperate Hours Duo taking to the stage. The indie-folk/rock group are known for their piano-driven sound and narrative songwriting.

Calne Music & Arts Festival Family Day - Saturday 3rd October

The Calne Music & Arts Festival gets properly underway this weekend with its free Family Day at Marden House on Saturday. Running from 11am to 4pm, there will be music and drama workshops, an art treasure hunt, live music, Claire’s Circus, Calne Silver Band and a craft workshop, with refreshments and light lunches available. Children must be accompanied.

What’s In Store - From Saturday 3rd October

Chippenham Museum's new What’s in Store exhibition opens on Saturday, giving visitors a chance to see items that have recently been added to the museum's collection. The exhibition includes everything from Bronze Age archaeological finds to modern and contemporary art, as well as work from the museum's Young Curators Group, and runs until 21st November.

French Cabaret - Saturday 3rd October

Saturday evening brings something rather different to Marden House, with a French Cabaret from 7.30pm. The evening will combine music, dance and chanson, with Flaming Feathers Cancan dancers and French duo Frankie and Pete performing songs from the Paris and Belle Époque era. Tickets are £12, £10 for Festival Friends and £5 for under-18s.

A Busy Weekend At Ruze

There’s a full weekend of live entertainment at Ruze in Chippenham, starting with an 80s-00s DJ Night on Friday 2nd October. Saturday brings country rock with Henry Ray and Courting Ghosts, while Sunday evening is Jazz Night with Moonlighting.

Lackham Open Event – Saturday 3rd October

Wiltshire College & University Centre is holding an open event at its Lackham campus near Chippenham on Saturday from 10am to midday. Visitors can look around the campus, meet lecturers and find out more about courses, facilities, funding and careers.

Cartref Chamber Collective - Sunday 4th October

The Calne Music & Arts Festival continues on Sunday with the Cartref Chamber Collective at Marden House from 3pm. The young ensemble will perform works by Bruch, Mozart, Roberts, Brahms and D’Indy, with tea included in the ticket price. Tickets are £14, £11 for Festival Friends and £5 for under-18s.

CycleFest At Castle Combe - Sunday 4th October

For something a little further afield, CycleFest returns to Castle Combe Circuit on Sunday, with a family fun day running from 11am to 4pm. Families can cycle around the race circuit and take part in activities, cycling skills sessions, children's games and a new timed circuit challenge for young cyclists. There is also a longer challenge ride for those looking for something more demanding.

 

Life Drawing - Sunday 4th October

For something a little different on Sunday evening, the Calne Music & Arts Festival is holding a Life Drawing session at Marden House from 6pm to 8pm. There will be a live model, a variety of poses and some light tuition for those who would like it. The session is for anyone aged 16 and over and costs £3, with free entry for Festival Friends and students. Participants are asked to bring their own drawing materials and boards, although some will be available.

Bowood Exhibitions

Bowood also has its two current exhibitions running this weekend. 1776: Secrets, Spies and the American Revolution explores Lord Shelburne's links with America around the time of the Declaration of Independence, while The Lifecycle of Plants features botanical artwork inspired by plants from the Bowood collection. Both exhibitions continue until 1st November.
