This year’s Wednesday evening Chamber Music event is again one not to miss. A fine, hand-picked ensemble of string players presents two legendary cornerstones of the repertoire. Shostakovich’s 8th Quartet from 1960 is the Soviet composer’s most personal response to the horrors of World War 2, but also to the impact that the years of Stalinism had on him directly - an unforgettable testament. Schubert’s late String Quintet, composed in the last weeks of his life in 1828 is quite simply one of the greatest works in all chamber music, a monumental statement of joy, beauty and reverence.
