A plan for 13 new homes for older residents in Hilmarton has been given the go-ahead after a government inspector overturned Wiltshire Council’s refusal.
Mathurst Developments has secured permission to build the properties at Sandy Furlong, on the edge of the village. The scheme includes a mix of two, three and four-bedroom homes designed specifically for older people who want to downsize.
Wiltshire Council’s planning department had originally rejected the proposal, raising concerns about the site’s suitability, the development’s visual impact and local infrastructure pressures. Mathurst appealed the decision, and the inspector has now ruled in their favour.
The inspector found that the benefits of providing downsizing opportunities for older people would outweigh 
the concerns raised. According to the decision, allowing residents to move into smaller, age-appropriate housing would help release larger family homes back into the local market.
The site is within walking distance of Hilmarton’s village centre, with nearby bus links providing access to services in Calne.
With the appeal approved, the development can now proceed.
