Wiltshire Council has identified a preferred site for the new household recycling centre that will replace the Lower Compton and Purton sites.
After looking at 21 possible locations, the council says land immediately south of the existing salt depot on Marlborough Road in Royal Wootton Bassett is the only site suitable to move on to the next stage.
Earlier this year, residents were invited to suggest possible locations, while council officers also assessed land already owned by the authority. In total, 21 sites were considered - 12 council-owned sites and nine put forward by members of the public.
The council looked at a range of factors including location, access, size, environmental issues and whether the sites could realistically accommodate a recycling centre.
It says the Marlborough Road site came out as the only suitable option because it is already in council ownership, is large enough for the facility, has good road access and would serve people who currently use the Lower Compton and Purton recycling centres.
The site has not been given the green light yet.
The next stage will involve a full feasibility study, along with ecological surveys, environmental assessments, traffic studies and applications for the necessary permits. A planning application will also have to be submitted before any work can begin.
Wiltshire Council previously agreed to close the Lower Compton and Purton household recycling centres when their current contracts end, with the aim of replacing them with a new council-owned facility for north Wiltshire.
The council says it will continue to update residents as the project progresses.
