Chippenham college evacuated following reports of gas leak

CHIPPENHAM campus of Wiltshire College was reportedly evacuated shortly after 2pm this afternoon due to a gas leak.

Fire crews were seen at Monkton Park investigating to find where the leak is.

Cocklebury Road has been closed and there are traffic delays both ways from Station Hill to Market Mead.

Sadlers Mead closed both ways from Cocklebury Road to Esmead.

Consequently, the roads in that area are particularly busy and the Olympiad Leisure Centre has issued a plea to visitors to consider parking at Emery Gate and walking to them.

The leak led to many homes being without any gas supply - yesterday evening Wales and West Utilities said:

"Following a third party damaging our gas main earlier in the 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗿𝘆 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗲 area of 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗺, we know some customers in the area are without gas.

"Our teams are in the area visiting the affected properties and where we know there are vulnerable customers, we are providing alternative heating and cooking appliances. The damaged caused to the main is complex and our team is currently working hard planning the repair.

"We would like to assure people that we are working as quickly as we can to resolve the situation and more information can be found here."
