A man who sexually assaulted a young girl in the 1990s has been jailed for 11 years.

Lloyd Burgess, 65, of Sheep Street in Devizes, appeared at Winchester Crown Court on Tuesday 17th March where he pleaded guilty to two counts of indecent assault. The offences took place between October 1995 and October 1998, when the victim was around 11 years old.

Burgess was sentenced at the same court on Friday 1st May to 11 years in prison.

Police said the offences were reported in 2021, prompting an investigation. Burgess was arrested and enquiries were carried out before he was charged.

Detective Constable Nicky Cross said: “I’d like to take this opportunity to praise the victim in this case for her bravery in reporting her ordeal to police all these years later. In doing so, she has enabled us to conduct an investigation into Burgess’ offending and ensure he was put before the courts.

"This case should serve as an example to anyone who may have experienced this kind of ordeal that it is crucial you report this to police, regardless of how much time has since passed. We will always take reports of this nature seriously and will leave no stone unturned in investigating offenders like Burgess.”

As well as the prison sentence, Burgess was made subject to an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order and will remain on the Sex Offenders Register.

Wiltshire Police is encouraging anyone affected by sexual offences to come forward. Anyone wishing to report an incident can call 101. Support is also available through specialist services, including First Light.
