Families across Wiltshire are being invited to attend a series of free child car seat safety check events later this month.
Wiltshire Council is running the sessions at supermarket car parks in Warminster, Devizes and Chippenham, where specialist advisors will offer guidance on how to correctly fit and use car seats.
The checks will take place from 10am to 3pm on:
- Tuesday 21st April – Morrisons, Weymouth Street, Warminster
- Wednesday 22nd April – Morrisons, Estcourt Street, Devizes
- Thursday 23rd April – Lidl, Hungerdown Lane, Chippenham
The initiative comes amid ongoing concerns that many child car seats are not fitted correctly, increasing the risk of injury in a collision.
Advisors will be available to check installations, answer questions and offer practical advice, including when to move a child to the next stage seat, how harnesses should fit, and how different vehicles can affect installation.
They will also highlight common safety issues, such as the impact of bulky clothing on harness effectiveness and the importance of keeping children rear-facing for as long as possible.
Councillor Martin Smith, Wiltshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, said the sessions are designed to give reassurance to families.
“Car seat safety can feel confusing, especially with different designs and changing regulations,” he said.
“Sometimes just a small adjustment can make a significant difference, so we would encourage anyone who uses a child car seat to come along and have it checked.”
The events form part of the council’s wider road safety work aimed at reducing risk for families travelling across the county.
