A Royal Air Force Chinook helicopter landed in a field in Pewsham this morning after suffering a birdstrike during a routine training flight.
The large military helicopter came down in a field off the A4 at around 10.10am, where it attracted plenty of attention from passing motorists.
The RAF has confirmed to Calne News that the aircraft is from RAF Odiham in Hampshire.
An RAF spokesperson said: “A Chinook helicopter from RAF Odiham suffered a birdstrike during a routine training flight. As a precautionary measure the aircraft landed.
“The crew are uninjured. An engineering team were dispatched from RAF Odiham to assess the damage to the aircraft.
“We would like to thank the landowners for their patience and assistance whilst we look to rectify the aircraft.”
The Chinook is the RAF's heavy-lift support helicopter and RAF Odiham is home to the UK's Chinook Force, with three Chinook squadrons based at the Hampshire station.
It is not yet known how long the aircraft will remain in the field while engineers assess and repair any damage.
The Chinook is primarily used to transport troops, equipment and supplies, as well as supporting a range of military and humanitarian operations.
