Sarah Gibson, the Member of Parliament for Chippenham, has announced that she has been diagnosed with an autoimmune condition, just months after returning to work following a life-threatening illness.

Ms Gibson spent time in intensive care at Bath's Royal United Hospital (RUH) over Christmas last year after suffering a viral infection that affected her heart. She had begun a phased return to work in Westminster in March.

However, in a recent statement, she revealed that she now requires a "short period of monitored treatment" at the RUH.

In a statement Sarah Gibson said: "Over the last 6 months, I have been closely monitored by the fantastic team at the RUH,"

"They have watched my recovery with eagle eyes, and I continue to be amazed by their care and attention."

Her health struggles began in December when RUH staff were uncertain about her recovery after she contracted pericarditis following a bout of the flu.

The autoimmune condition diagnosis follows this initial illness.

Due to the nature of her new condition and her doctor's advice, Ms. Gibson will be self-isolating during her treatment, reducing her in-person visits and work in Westminster during this time.

She added, "My recovery has proved slower than I anticipated. Following a series of tests, my doctors have discovered that I have developed an auto immune condition."

Despite the setback, Gibson reassured her constituents that she remains dedicated to her duties. "I continue to remain fully committed to working on your behalf, albeit virtually, and my office will remain fully operational during my treatment," she affirmed.

Ms. Gibson concluded her statement by expressing her gratitude to the NHS staff, saying: "Once again, my thanks go to our local NHS services, who are doing an incredible job under immense pressure."
