Traffic on the M4 was temporarily brought to a halt today, after two swans were spotted on the carriageway.

Wiltshire Specialist Operations officers responded to reports of the birds on the motorway and safely intervened, stopping vehicles while the swans were moved out of danger.

One swan was found on the carriageway, while the second remained nearby on the embankment.

Sharing the update on social media, the team referenced the 2007 comedy Hot Fuzz, writing that traffic was halted for the “greater good” - a well-known line from the film.

In Hot Fuzz, a running joke centres on an escaped swan in the fictional village of Sandford, with the line: “It’s just the one swan, actually.”

Officers thanked motorists for their patience while the birds were taken to safety. Photographs released by the team show one officer carrying a swan away from the motorway.

No injuries were reported and both swans were successfully removed from the road.
