Children aged between five and 15 will be able to travel free on Stagecoach and Faresaver bus services throughout August as part of a nationwide government scheme to help families save money during the school holidays.

Running from 1st to 31st August, the initiative allows eligible children to travel free on most local bus services across England, although some routes are excluded.

Both Stagecoach West and Faresaver have confirmed they are taking part in the scheme.

Stagecoach says the offer applies to most local bus journeys in England, but excludes some longer-distance coach services, dedicated school buses and routes where concessionary travel is not normally accepted. Children under five already travel free all year.

Meanwhile, Faresaver, which has operated its own Kids Go Free promotion during the school holidays for more than 20 years, says it is joining the government's national scheme this summer.

Because operators will now be reimbursed by the government, Faresaver says it will follow the national rules, meaning free travel is available for children aged 5 to 15. Unlike previous years, 16 to 18-year-olds will pay the normal child fare, and proof of age may be requested.

The company also confirmed that children do not have to be accompanied by an adult to qualify for free travel, although it recommends younger children continue to travel with a responsible adult where possible.

The government says the scheme forms part of its Great British Summer Savings campaign, aimed at helping families enjoy cheaper days out during the holidays.

Adult passengers will continue to benefit from the £3 maximum single bus fare until the end of December 2026. From 1st January 2027, the cap will reduce to £2, remaining in place throughout 2027.

Anyone planning to use the free travel offer is advised to check with their bus operator before travelling, as some services are excluded from the scheme.
