Wiltshire Council will begin the first public consultation on its new Local Plan next month, giving residents, businesses the chance to have their say on how the county should develop in the years ahead.
The scoping consultation will run from 2nd to 30th September 2026 and will look at what the new Local Plan should cover and how people would like to be involved as it is developed.
The Local Plan will help decide where new homes, jobs and infrastructure should be provided across Wiltshire, as well as considering the future supply of minerals and waste management facilities.
The council says the plan will need to take account of significant future growth, with current Government policy requiring Wiltshire to provide around 3,500 new homes each year.
A number of public engagement events will take place during the consultation, although there is currently no event planned for Calne.
The nearest events for Calne residents are in Chippenham and Devizes:
- Chippenham Market – Friday 4 September, 8.30am to 4pm
- Royal Wootton Bassett Library – Wednesday 9 September, 1.30pm to 6.30pm
- Devizes Market – Thursday 10 September, 9am to 3pm
- Trowbridge, The Shires – Tuesday 15 September, 10am to 3pm
- Public webinar – Thursday 17 September, 6pm to 7pm
Wiltshire Council says more information about the events will be published before the consultation begins.
Cllr Ian Thorn, Leader of Wiltshire Council and Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning, said the new Local Plan would play an important role in deciding how Wiltshire grows.
He said: “The Wiltshire Local Plan will play a vital role in shaping the future of our county, helping us to plan for new homes, jobs and infrastructure while protecting and enhancing the things that make Wiltshire such a special place to live and work.
“We know there are important conversations to have about how Wiltshire should grow in the future, and we want our communities to be at the very heart of that process.”
He added that local feedback would be important in making sure future development delivers the homes, jobs, services and infrastructure needed by communities.
The scoping consultation is the first formal stage of public engagement in the new Local Plan process.
The process will officially begin on 30 October 2026, when the Government's 30-month timetable for completing the plan will start.
Residents will be able to find out more and take part in the consultation through the Wiltshire Council Local Plan website.
