Young footballers from Calne Town Youth U9’s Bears are celebrating after winning their first ever competitive cup final this weekend.
The team lifted the Mid Wilts Youth Football League U9 Cup on Saturday 16th May following a dramatic 2-1 victory over St Andrews at Green Lane in Devizes.
Thanks to support from Calne Community Transport, the squad travelled to the final together ahead of the 12pm kick-off. The transport was sponsored by Pizza Direct and RSF Electrics Ltd, while Level Up Construction sponsors the team’s kit.
The final proved to be a closely fought contest, with the opening quarter ending goalless as both sides battled evenly.
Calne eventually found the breakthrough in the second quarter when Xander bundled home the opener to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.
St Andrews responded in the third quarter with an equaliser, setting up a tense finale.
With the match finely poised, Calne were awarded a free kick in a dangerous position during the final quarter. Myllo stepped up and fired home to restore the lead with what teammates described as a “top bins” finish.
A strong defensive performance from Jayden helped the team hold on for victory and secure the cup.
The achievement marks a major milestone for the side, particularly as several players only joined at the start of the season, with many having never previously played for a football team.
The squad has also adapted to working under four different coaches across the last three seasons.
Coaches praised the determination shown by the players, including those who picked up knocks during the match but continued battling on, as well as the strong support from families and supporters on the sidelines.
The club also thanked sponsors, coaches, players and families for their backing throughout the season.
