A 76-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson following a series of fires across Calne over the past two days.
Five fires were reported in the town within the space of around three hours yesterday (10th August), with police now saying a further two fires reported today (11th August) are believed to be linked.
The man was arrested following the incidents and has been referred to mental health professionals for appropriate ongoing support.
Firefighters were first called to a hedgerow fire in Oxford Road at around 2.30pm yesterday.
Further fires were then reported in brambles and grassland in Redman Road, again in Oxford Road, Stokes Croft and Swaddon Street.
Two further fires were reported today - one near the Knapp and another more extensive fire in Low Lane, where around 100 metres of hedgerow was burnt.
Neighbourhood Sergeant Jamie Ball said there had been no reported injuries.
“Thankfully there were no reported injuries as a result of these fires, which were extinguished thanks to the swift actions of colleagues from Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service.
“It is concerning to think that these fires could easily have spread if left unchecked in these extremely dry conditions.
“I would like to thank members of the public for their ongoing support and vigilance which helped us identify and detain the suspect.
“The suspect has been referred to the care of mental health professionals for appropriate ongoing support.”
Police are urging residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious fire-setting behaviour immediately by calling 999 and asking for the police.
Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is also reminding people of the increased risk of outdoor fires in the current dry conditions.
Residents are advised to avoid using barbecues, campfires or camping stoves, particularly on heathland or in open spaces. Anyone who does use a barbecue or fire pit should make sure it is completely extinguished with water and that any remnants are cold before disposal.
People are also being urged not to discard cigarettes or other smoking materials on the ground or from vehicles, and not to have bonfires during the current high-risk conditions.
Fireworks and sky lanterns should also not be used, as they can easily start fires in dry vegetation.
Anyone who sees a fire in the countryside should move to a safe location and call 999 immediately, giving the Fire & Rescue Service as much information as possible about its location. What3Words can be used to provide an accurate location.
