A Calne resident is taking on a 60-mile cycling challenge with his grandchildren after the cancellation of this year's carnival left them disappointed.
Barry spent three months over the winter working with his 10-year-old granddaughter to design and build a boat around his tandem for the 2026 Calne Carnival procession.
But when the carnival was cancelled, Barry's two 10-year-old grandchildren were left disappointed.
Rather than dismantling the unusual creation, Barry and his family decided to put it to another use.
On Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th September, they will attempt to cover 60 miles along the A4 between Calne and Marlborough and back, with 30 miles planned each day.
The homemade tandem is big, heavy and slow, making the distance a considerable challenge.
Barry's four grandchildren will take turns riding alongside him, while their parents follow in a support vehicle to provide a safety back-up and allow the riders to swap over and take breaks.
Barry volunteers at Goatacre Farm Animal Sanctuary, and the challenge will raise money towards the care of its rescued farm animals and pets.
The sanctuary has ongoing costs including food, veterinary treatment and general care, with donations helping to provide the animals with the support and safe home they need.
The family is hoping people will sponsor the challenge, with donations of any size welcome.
Anyone unable to donate can also support the challenge by sharing the fundraiser.
