If you were woken up to the sound of house alarms or your house suddenly started beeping, flashing or lighting up at around 5am this morning, you weren't the only one.
Residents have been reporting a brief power interruption across large parts of the town, with dozens of people saying their electricity went off for anything from a few seconds to several minutes.
The comments have been coming in from all over Calne, with reports from Honeysuckle Close, Curzon Street, High Penn Park, Lansdowne Park, Church Street, Stockley Lane, Braemor Road, London Road, The Pippin and many more.
For some, it meant flashing cooker clocks. Others were greeted by house alarms, doorbells going into meltdown, smart bulbs suddenly flooding bedrooms with light, and fans deciding 5am was the perfect time to wake everyone up.
A spokesperson from Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks told Calne News: “These short interruptions to power supplies are a sign the network is working as planned and that these circuits are benefiting from ‘automation’.
“This is a system built into sections of the electricity infrastructure, which can detect the potential for a power cut and quickly works to identify an alternative circuit to switch customers supplies to and prevent an outage.
“While this switching is taking place, the power can go off for a matter of seconds or up to a couple of minutes and can take place up to three times over this short period.
“Each year, SSEN invests millions of pounds to install this system on its distribution networks across central southern England.”
