The woman behind Calne’s Pocket Park project is set to leave the town this week after playing a major role in creating one of its best-used community spaces.
Fiona Campbell, who is moving to Bristol next week, came up with the original idea for the Pocket Park after researching “pop-up parks” from around the world.
She later approached Wiltshire Council with a proposal to transform the unused old market place in Calne into a Pocket Park and community garden, and successfully secured Lottery funding to help get the project off the ground.

In little more than 12 months, Fiona’s plans for the park were becoming a reality. The Pocket Park is now in its eighth year and has become a well-used outdoor venue for the community.
In its early days, the space quickly developed beyond a community garden and began hosting a range of events, including Apple Day, plant swaps, a visit from Chloe’s Farm, a silent disco and a performance of Wind in the Willows.
It continues to host a busy programme of activities, with Easter events for children planned for 2nd April, circus skills workshops on 26th April, a series of summer concerts, monthly chess, and a performance of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland on Tuesday 28th July.
As well as her work on the Pocket Park, Fiona also jointly led the 2024 Priestley250 celebrations in Calne.

The programme included a community quilt now on display at the Heritage Centre, two murals, an Oxygenfest day at the Pocket Park, a Priestley concert during the Music and Arts Festival, children’s art and writing competitions, and a banner designed by the Rise Trust youth group.
Those involved with the Pocket Park said Fiona has made a major contribution to community life in Calne and will be greatly missed when she leaves.
