Calne Pocket Park has been awarded a £1,500 community grant from the National Garden Scheme.

The funding will go towards improving the park, including replacing some of the wooden planters, which will be made by Calne Men’s Shed, as well as buying paint and compost.

Chairman John Boaler said volunteers were delighted with the award, particularly given the level of competition.

He said: “We understand there was a very large group of high quality applicants. I am sure that the Pocket Park getting a Green Flag Award three years running and being judged ‘Outstanding’ last year by RHS South West significantly strengthened our bid.”

The group has made a conscious effort in recent years to secure funding from a range of sources, rather than relying solely on local council grants. Previous support has come from organisations including Wessex Water, Churchill Retirement Living, Calne Lions and the Tesco Community Fund.

As always, the team is keen to welcome more volunteers to help care for the park and support its events.

There is plenty planned over the coming months, with summer concerts returning on the first Sunday of each month from June through to September. A performance of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is also scheduled for Monday 28th July, alongside the park’s regular chess afternoons.
