Hills has issued a fresh update on work at the Lower Compton landfill, outlining temporary changes over the next two weeks while repairs are carried out at one of its waste treatment facilities.
Waste will be temporarily diverted to the Lower Compton landfill while Hills carries out repairs to a failed internal crane at its Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) facility. The plant is expected to reopen on 20th July.
According to Hills, waste taken to Lower Compton during this period will be transferred directly into landfill, as no new waste will be accepted at the MBT while the repairs are completed.
The temporary changes coincide with ongoing work at the landfill to reduce odours after months of complaints from residents in Calne and nearby villages.
According to the company, capping works at the landfill are due to be completed shortly as part of its action plan. From 13th July, six new gas extraction wells will be installed in the newly capped area of the site. The gas collected from those wells, along with existing ones, is used to generate electricity.
Hills says it is also continuing to work closely with the Environment Agency to ensure compliance with its environmental permits.
