Residents in Calne are being asked for their views as Wiltshire Council prepares to adopt a new Speed Limit Policy.

Calne Town Council is encouraging people to comment on the proposals, which would make it easier to introduce 20mph limits in certain areas.

Under the plans, requests for 20mph zones in residential streets, town centres and places with high pedestrian use would be assessed by county traffic engineers, in line with national guidance.

Advisory 20mph limits outside schools during peak times would remain.

If a scheme is approved, Wiltshire Council would cover the cost of assessing applications and completing the legal process. Town and parish councils would pay for any changes on the road, such as signs and markings.

The council says the changes are intended to make speed limits clearer for drivers and better suited to the roads they are used on.

Decisions would be based on factors including traffic speeds, collision history and how roads are used. Whole routes would be looked at, rather than individual sections.

Wiltshire Council says the policy is intended to improve road safety and reduce serious and fatal collisions, with speed identified as a factor in many incidents. The proposals also form part of the council’s wider “Vision Zero” approach to making roads safer.

Cabinet Member for Highways, Cllr Martin Smith, said: “It puts safety first, supports our Vision Zero approach to reducing serious and fatal collisions, and helps ensure speed limits make sense for the roads people use every day.”

Calne Town Council has asked residents to complete a highways improvement form, discuss proposals with their local councillor, and return submissions by email to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

A decision on whether to adopt the policy will be made by Wiltshire Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, Cllr Martin Smith.
