Cllr Orrey Pike recently visited Wiltshire Police Headquarters in Devizes to see firsthand the steps being taken to strengthen the frontline.

At a recent Full Council meeting, Calne Police presented their regular update on local crime rates, reporting a 5% rise in violent crime. Cllr Pike expressed concern over the figures, noting that “a number of residents have raised this with me directly.”

While the increase is concerning, Calne Police highlighted that domestic abuse cases are included in the violent crime category. This means the rise does not necessarily indicate the streets of Calne are less safe, and anti-social behaviour incidents remain very low.

During his visit to the Police HQ, Cllr Pike learned that one way the force is bolstering its frontline is through the recruitment of Special Constables. So far this year, 20 new Specials have joined Wiltshire Police, providing extra support to regular officers.

Special Constables are fully trained volunteer officers with the same powers and uniform as their full-time colleagues. They play a key role in patrolling communities, preventing crime, and offering visible reassurance to residents.

Michelle Dring, Head of Recruitment and Workforce Planning at Wiltshire Police, said: “Special Constables are an incredible part of our policing family. They bring dedication, skills, and local knowledge, and make a real difference in keeping communities safe. We’re always looking for more people to step forward, and I’d encourage anyone who wants to contribute to apply.”

Cllr Pike added: “With crime rising locally, residents are understandably concerned. I wanted to make sure that those concerns were being heard at the highest levels and to understand what action is being taken. One of the most effective ways to boost police presence is through the recruitment of Special Constables. These are dedicated local people who give up their own time to help keep our streets safe.”

He continued: “Michelle’s energy and commitment to her work was inspiring. She is incredibly engaged, on top of the recruitment numbers, and is clearly an asset to Wiltshire Police. It was encouraging to hear about the progress being made, but there is still more to do. I would strongly encourage people in Calne who care about their community to consider applying to become a Special Constable."

The role of a Special Constable is varied and rewarding – from supporting crime prevention and road safety operations, to assisting with events, and patrolling alongside regular officers. Comprehensive training ensures new recruits are supported every step of the way.
