A motorist with a history of driving-related offences has been banned from driving after he overtook an off-duty police officer in Calne.
George Harry Betts, 24, of Bristol Road, Allington overtook the off-duty officer at speed on Sandpit Road in a BMW 535D back in May this year, he then claimed to be test-driving the car.
Betts was also captured on video attempting to drift the car on a nearby mini roundabout. He then attempted to persuade the owner of teh BMW to lie to the police to cover his story.
Betts is a repeat offender for driving related crimes and has previously had totting disqualifications, whereby the points on the licence led to an automatic ban.
He pleaded guilty to careless driving with no insurance and was dealt a two-year driving ban at Salisbury Magistrates’ Court on 3rd October. He was also ordered to pay £365 in fines and court costs.
PC Hobbs, from Wiltshire’s Roads Policing Unit, said: “Betts is a repeat offender who clearly shows no regard for the law.
“It was only by mere chance that nothing was coming in the opposite direction when Betts was driving in such a poor manner, that a collision did not occur.”
