TWO domesticated rabbits believed to have been dumped by their owners at Penn Lake in Calne have been rescued by a Calne lady who is part of rabbit rescue service - Bunny Angels UK.
Several visitors to Penn Lake have reported sightings of a pair of white rabbits at the reserve recently. Volunteers from Bunny Angels spent some time up there and have managed to capture the boy and girl rabbit, now named Albie and Penny.
One of the rescuers, Megan Cotter, told us: "I took them to the vet straight away, the boy has very sore genitals and the vet suggested this could be myxomatosis or syphillus, he isn't neutured, we are guessing the female isn't spayed so she is booked in for an emergency spay on Monday."
The rabbits are being emergency housed at Megan's home until a temporary foster carer can be found. Megan explained she is already caring for other rabbits and she, alongside many other rescuers, has no space and no funds to pay for the vet bills.
She expained: "They’re covered in fleas and ticks, unvaccinated and un-neutered. We currently have no funds available for any vet treatment they desperately need.
"Charities are struggling with no space and no funds but we are doing the best we can - we need to raise about £1000 to get them well and care for them."
For anyone concerned the rabbits may be wild ones, Megan explained to us that this is very unlikely. The pair appear to be albino white rabbits but these are very rare and don't often make it to adulthood, being practically blind, they tend to run toward danger rather than away. It is much more likely that Albie and Penny are Florida Whites. It is also worth noting that wild rabbits tend to stay in a warren in the wild and not pair off, they'd also be unlikely to be so happy to approach humans.
A GoFundMe page has now been set up with the aim of raising funds to cover the care and veterinary bills for Albie and Penny. If you feel you can donate anything toward their care, you can do so HERE.
