Loneliness or mental health issues appears to be a growing problem in our beautiful community of Calne. Older people are especially vulnerable to loneliness and social isolation – and it can have a serious effect on health.

According to Age UK, more than 2 million people in England over the age of 75 live alone, and more than a million older people say they go over a month without speaking to a friend, neighbour or family member.

People can become socially isolated for a variety of reasons, such as getting older or weaker, no longer being the hub of their family, leaving the workplace, the deaths of spouses and friends, or through disability or illness.

Whatever the cause, it's shockingly easy to be left feeling alone and vulnerable, which can lead to depression and a serious decline in physical health and wellbeing.

Unfortunately, if you are struggling or know of someone who is, it can feel overwhelming and difficult to know where to go for support - someone who's lonely probably also finds it hard to reach out.

However, in Calne we are fortunate to have a number of community support groups ready to support those in need. The groups operate on a not for profit basis and offer a non-judgemental support and foster a loving environment.

These groups include:

Heart of the Community, Coleman's Farm Community Centre - 07493736469

Marden Community Hub, 20 Church Street - 07368303616

The Men's Shed (not just for men) - Groundsman's Building, Calne Rec, Anchor Road who are open to anyone popping in on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays 1pm to 5pm

In addition to this, Kingston Care Home in Lansdowne Cresent welcome anyone aged 65 and over for activities and lunch Monday to Friday 10am - 2pm - 01249 815555

Anyone who needs support to access a group because of mental health can ask their GP to be referred to a Community Connector who will support them alternatively speak to someone at Heart of the Community or Marden Hub who can help with a referral.

Please don't suffer in silence - speak to someone.
