CALNE Police have issued another formal warning as they continue to take a firm stance on e-scooters in the town.
On Monday 7th April, an under 18-year-old riding an e-scooter in Hungerford Road, was stopped by officers and issued with a formal warning.
Police have been targeting the issue after receiving multiple reports from worried members of the community who have seen young people riding e-scooters illegally.
PCSO Mark Cook commented: "Several warnings were issued last year, but since the start of January, we have already seen several young people riding e-scooters illegally.
"We will continue to give advice on e-scooters and the restrictions on using them if purchased. Anyone under 18 seen riding an e-scooter will be issued a warning and parents will be advised."
E-scooters are classified as Personal Light Electric Vehicles (PLEVs) and are treated as motor vehicles under UK law. This classification requires compliance with legal requirements that include MOT, licensing, tax, and insurance.
Due to the absence of number plates, signaling ability, and visible rear lights, riding e-scooters on public roads is illegal. Moreover, it is against the law to use privately-owned e-scooters in any public place, including pavements, parks and town centres.
The only legal usage of a privately-owned e-scooter is on private property, with the landowner's consent. Calne Police have emphasised the importance of education regarding e-scooter laws, stating: “Our focus remains on using a problem-solving approach, intervention, and engagement with riders to make them aware of the law regarding e-scooter.”
Parents are urged to refrain from purchasing e-scooters for their children until they fully understand the regulations, as any child caught riding one will face a warning, and repeat offenders will have their e-scooters seized and could be reported for legal violations.
For further information on e-scooter regulations, residents are encouraged to visit the Wiltshire Police website for comprehensive guidance.
