Last month we welcomed a new Town Mayor for Calne - Cllr Jon Fisher. Here, he takes a look back at his first weeks in the role.

by Town Mayor Cllr Jon Fisher

One month of being Town Mayor, and I can already say that it is the privilege of my lifetime.

Since mayor making in May, I’ve had 12 engagements. I’ve run an impromptu junior council session for kids from Heddington Primary School who were visiting our wonderful Town Hall.

I’ve greeted scouts visiting from our twin town of Eningen in Germany and I’ve waved off kids going on a trip to Longleat, organised by the Rotary Club and part funded by Calne Town Council.

The event with the most smiles was easily the 100th junior park run, which I had the pleasure to set off a couple of Sundays ago.

1st June saw me leading the town’s first ever Pride parade. It was a memory I’ll treasure forever and a moment of inclusiveness and positivity our whole community can be proud of.

I represented our town at Chippenham’s mayor making and have visited the REME at Lyneham.

On the 80th anniversary of D-Day, I had the honour to represent the town as our Town Crier read the words of commemoration from proclamation steps. It was moving beyond words, and following this I laid a wreath at the war memorial from all of us who are citizens of Calne. We will remember them.

Calne FC have not been shy in asking me as the mayor to support their incredible work. I’ve given out medals at their fantastic summer tournament, presented cups at the end of season presentation evening, and yes – had fun and a couple of drinks at Party on the Pitch as their guest.

So, it’s been a lot of fun, including taking a selfie with Hero Bear as I spent time supporting the Help for Heroes fundraising stall at Tesco, but there is also hard work to do including chairing Full Council meetings – two of which happened at the end of June.

We have a busy year ahead in which the Council will make some important decisions, so this part of the role
will be very important in the coming months. As Mayor, I promised to improve Council governance, and to start the conversation about improving our town centre. These will be my focus over the next few months and I look forward to telling you all about it.
