On Thursday, 1st May 2025, elections will take place for 98 Unitary Wiltshire Councillors and across the Parish and Town Councils in Wiltshire. We take a closer look at the candidates who will be vying for your votes in Calne.
Meet the candidates - Jackie Beckett, candidate for Calne Chilvester & Abberd.
Jackie, a Calne resident for over 30 years, is running for re-election to Calne Town Council. "Everyone told us we wouldn't like it here, but how wrong were they?" she says, reflecting on her long connection with the town.
Having served as a town councillor for just over a year, Jackie chose to initially decline a nomination for Wiltshire Council to focus on learning the ropes at the local level. "There is a huge amount to learn, and I can’t imagine trying to do both well as a first timer. I’m not sure people realise how much is involved."
Standing as an independent candidate, Jackie stressed her commitment to the community over party politics. "I truly feel that party politics aren’t relevant at the town council.
"In my mind, we are elected to serve the town and help folk out, not promote any particular political party."
A colleague on the town council describes Jackie as "a great addition…always wanting to hear the voice of the community through her coffee mornings. She has worked to make council meetings more inclusive and easier for everyone to understand."
In her closing statement, Jackie promises straightforward representation. "I’m a straightforward Northerner, as many of you know. So… no flannel from me or promises to change the world. If you want someone to stand up for you, wherever you live in Calne, please vote for me on Thursday 1st May. Thank you."
