On Thursday, 1st May 2025, elections will take place for 98 Unitary Wiltshire Councillors and across the Parish and Town Councils in Wiltshire. We take a closer look at the candidates who will be vying for your votes in Calne.

Meet Jeremy Percy, Lib Dem candidate for Calne Central.

Since relocating to Calne from South Wales three years ago to be closer to his family, Jeremy Percy and his wife Sherrill have deeply integrated into the community.

Elected to the Town Council in 2024 representing the Central ward, Percy has quickly become a prominent figure, dedicating his time and energy to various local initiatives.

Percy's commitment to the environment is evident through his active involvement with the River Warriors and the Friends of the Marden Valley. He is currently leading both an otter tracking project and an initiative to restock the River Marden with young eels, addressing the near extinction of the species in local waterways.

Furthermore, as a long-time beekeeper, he volunteers as apiary manager and provides training to aspiring beekeepers within the local Beekeeper's Association, raising awareness about the critical threats facing pollinators.

Drawing on a diverse professional background as a former captain of fishing vessels, coastal tugs, and fisheries protection vessels, followed by a career representing sustainable fishers across the UK and Europe, Jeremy has found a new avenue to utilise his experience in European politics.

"The people of Calne have been so welcoming, many of the challenges they face so severe and the opportunity to make a difference through the town council so important, I am genuinely proud to serve the community." Jeremy told us.

As a member of the Town and Community Matters Committee and Deputy Chair of the Planning, Licensing and Highways Committee, Jeremy emphasises the importance of infrastructure development alongside new housing. "I am a member of the Town and Community Matters Committee and Deputy Chair of the Planning, Licencing and Highways Committee, a vital route for residents and the Council to make our voices heard in key planning applications.

"It is all very well developers coming in and seeking to build yet more houses but unless they also provide the infrastructure for the additional services that we all need, doctors, dentists, pharmacies and so on then things will get worse rather than better for us all."

With a background as a former foster parent, Jeremy understands the challenges faced by young people. He is equally committed to ensuring a high quality of life for older residents and protecting the environment for future generations.

"Every candidate will promise voters the earth, but I stand by my record of actively representing the interests of residents in Central Ward, making their views heard in the council and working hard to ensure that Calne can provide services and support for us all for the future."
