On Thursday, 1st May 2025, elections will take place for 98 Unitary Wiltshire Councillors and across the Parish and Town Councils in Wiltshire. We take a closer look at the candidates who will be vying for your votes in Calne.
Jon Fisher, Calne's current Town Mayor, is standing for election in Calne North for both Wiltshire Council and Calne Town Council.
He lives in Calne North with his wife and children and works as a leadership and management apprenticeship tutor for some of the UK’s largest companies.
With eight years of experience on Calne Town Council, Jon has built a reputation for his work in the town.
He has served on Calne Town Council since 2017 and is known for his strong attendance and active leadership, "I've consistently pushed for practical, people-focused policies, particularly around ensuring responsible council spending," Jon told us.
As Town Mayor, he has been instrumental in securing £60,000 in funding from Wiltshire Council for the town centre - an initial win which he says is 'just the start'.
“We’ve shown what can happen when we push hard and work in partnership. I’m confident we can secure more.” Jon added.
Another major project Jon has championed is the development of a "ninja playground" at Calne Recreation Ground. - due to be completed later this year, Jon says the project is a direct result of his work and is being funded through developer contributions - not council tax.
“It’s exactly the kind of smart, community-focused investment I believe in,” he told us.
Jon has also taken a strong stance on council finances. He opposed what he calls the “ridiculous” use of reserves to buy three houses for private rent, arguing that public money should be used to benefit the wider community.
“I’ve fought hard to make sure the Council spends your money wisely. We need more councillors who take that responsibility seriously,” he says.
As Chair of the Calne Town Charity, Jon has worked to secure the charity's long-term future and support vulnerable residents.
If elected to Wiltshire Council, Jon says his priorities will include improving access to local NHS services, creating opportunities for young people, and attracting meaningful investment into the town - something he says Calne has been lacking for too long.
“Too often, Calne is a forgotten town where Wiltshire Council is concerned. That has to change. I’ll be a strong local campaigner, standing up for Calne North and making sure your voice is heard.”
Jon says that with his track record of delivery, a clear set of priorities, and a reputation for being both
principled and practical, he is making the case that he’s the kind of councillor Wiltshire - and Calne - needs more of.
