On Thursday, 1st May 2025, elections will take place for 98 Unitary Wiltshire Councillors and across the Parish and Town Councils in Wiltshire. We take a closer look at the candidates who will be vying for your votes in Calne.
Robert MacNaughton is hoping to be re-elected as Town Councillor for Calne Central Ward and Liberal Democrat Wiltshire Councillor for the Chilvester & Abberd Ward.
Having lived in Calne for many years, Robert believes he has developed a deep understanding of the community's needs and concerns.
Robert's key priorities include repairing roads and footpaths, building affordable homes and improving local services.
He is also committed to securing a new health centre for Calne and protecting the environment by cleaning up local rivers.
Robert commented: "Calne is a wonderful town, full of hard working community groups most of whom are supported by Calne Town Council through our Community Grants scheme.
"I joined the Lib Dems because they were doing all of the community work in Calne back in 2013. I am a member of the Friends of the Marden Valley, and River Warriors; groups that look after the Marden corridor, and the Abberd Brook as it runs through the Coleman’s Farm estate."
As a Unitary Councillor, Robert has continued to work for our rivers - putting pressure on the water companies to find other solutions to pumping sewage into our water ways, clearing rubbish along their banks, initiating River Blessings and River Festivals with fellow river groups throughout the county, and raising the profile of our living, but endangered, rivers.
In October last year, Robert put forward a motion about Wiltshire Rivers for debate by Wiltshire Council. The motion was passed unanimously.
Cllr Robert MacNaughton said "I know this is only a small step in a long battle, but there is no doubting how strongly so many of us feel about the water companies dumping sewage in our rivers. "
Robert believes that this election presents an opportunity for change and hopes voters will support him in his bid for re-election. With his experience and commitment to the community, Robert says he aims to continue delivering positive change for the residents of Calne Chilvester & Abberd Ward.
